I have seen friends and random girls suffered with this foot ingrown couple of times already. I also had a college classmate who eventually went through an operation to get rid of her toenails ingrown! I then realized how serious this thing can get when it started bothering you.

Although most foot care experts say that clipping toe nails straight across helps prevent in grown toenails, you may still fall victim to one anyway: it doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, it can happen to anyone. Shoes that don’t fit right can cause an ingrown nail, as can just being on your feet or walking a lot. If a nail is becoming ingrown, you’ll first notice that it’s feeling tender where the nail is pushing into the side of your skin. You may find yourself favoring that foot, or pressing your toe against the inside of your shoes.

If you don’t catch it soon enough, the toe will become inflamed where the nail is digging into the soft skin of your toe. People who ignore their ingrown toenails end up having surgery, because things can get infected pretty fast. I saw a picture of a neglected toenail once, and I’ll never get the image out of my head.

If you think you’re getting an ingrown toenail, soak your foot in hot water, and even add some lavender or tea tree oil to help soften the skin further. After you’ve given it a good soak, say twenty or thirty minutes, see if you can pull the embedded nail up on the corner, lifting it away from the skin. You can use a nail file for this delicate operation, just barely, slowly sliding it under the edge of the nail. Be careful that your hand doesn’t slip –the pain will be enormous. (I probably don’t have to tell you to be gentle –the agony in your toe will make you ever so careful!)

Sometimes it takes more than one soaking to get the nail soft enough to lift from the skin. Especially if you have thin, sharp nails, they are more likely to bite into the sides of the toe. If you don’t succeed the first time, dry off your poor foot, dab on lavender or tea tree oil (they both have antiseptic and antibiotic properties) or some Neosporin, and try again tomorrow. In the mean time, stay off your foot as much as possible, and when you put your shoes on in the morning, first wrap your toe with a thick, soft bandage to cushion it.

A newly ingrown toenail will usually concede de-feet (har-har) after three or four days of gently soaking and cautious prying. Once the nail lifts past the skin, trim the nail with a small pair of scissors, and if your toe’s not too sore, file it smooth. Now you will have a tender, pink channel in your toe where the nail once pressed. Keep it bandaged and clean. To prevent infection, apply antibiotics after bathing until your toe doesn’t hurt anymore.

If the toenail is stubborn and you can’t get it out after several tries, hobble off to the doctor, who will put it to rights for you.

Ingrown toenails are like ear infections: some people go their whole lives without having a single toenail upset, and others are plagued by then. Once you get one, it’s more likely to recur, so make sure you treat your feet nicely, buy good shoes that fit right, and pay attention to any toe pain that arises.

While most of us gives a lot of fuss on our skin, hair, makeup, eyes, lips, etc. Our nails are probably one of the few parts of our body that we lack more care. Personally, I consider having great looking and clean nails a reflection of the kind of person you are. It depicts your outlook towards personal hygiene. Well anyway, see common nail problems below and their causes and probably how we can avoid having a not so pleasing site when we lay our hands open.

1.Brittle Nails:
Brittle nails and flaking of nails are very common due to excessive dryness of the nail plate.The nail plate is made up of dead keratin cells held together by a natural glue of fats and water.Any loss of fats and water causes the cells to separate and results in flaking and brittleness of the nails.

A.Many of our domestic chores remove the natural fats from the nails resulting in brittle nails, so do wear gloves.

B.Nail polish removers also have a dehydrating effect.If you have brittle nails avoid removing your nail polish too frequently.You can use a colourless polish or a base-coat or a top-coat, because then you can keep touching it up quite happily, without having to use the remover very frequently.

C.Regular massage around the nail-base with cream can have a good effect on brittle nails.

2.Hangnails
Hangnails are tears in the skin of the nailfolds and the cuticle.The cuticle and the nailfolds have a tendency to stick to the nail plate as it grows forward; the stretched cuticle may eventually tear.Sometimes the skin of the nailfolds also cracks, particularly if it is dry.Nervous nail biting habits, chewing nails, and picking the cuticle all encourage the developement of hangnails.

A.To avoid such conditions, keep the cuticles soft by massaging in creams and regularly loosening it from the nail-plate.

B.Clip off existing hangnails.

C.Avoid pulling off slivers as this can be very painful and can even cause infection of the nailfolds.

3.In-Growing Toe-Nails
If the toenail is not cut properly, it penetrates into the nail-fold as it grows, causing redness, swelling and pain.

A.Don’t cut them too short;

B.Don’t ever cut down the side of the nail;

C.Always follow the shape of the toe;

D.Once the pain has started, try to push the nail-fold away from the sharp edge of the skin.

4.Fungal Infections Of The Nail
When fungus infects the nails, they become thickened, broken and discoloured.Fungal infection can be easily treated- griseofulvin is given for milder infection and ketoconazole for more severe types-but let your doctor treat you.

Then An artificial nail tip facilitates the creation of “French” nails which became an elegant alternative. But these days beautifying nails has come to the next level, more elegant, fun, artistic, festive and perhaps a little costly, but it’s worth the prize promise!

For those who do not know, hand painted nail art is the latest fashion in nails recent year, popularized by the rising trend in USA and Japan. Depending on the services available, your manicurist will either draw patterns on your nails with specially designed nail art tools. A more sophisticated nail art paint would involve an abstract, landscapes, aesthetic and spiritual nail art on the nails the same way peoples do paint on the canvas. In Japan, nail art is such a huge thing that there are even contests where top nail artists pit their skills against the best in the country. The result of their creation would be something beyond your wildest imagination. You will really be amazed when you see the difference in your fingers even before nail polish was applied. They will be so much neater and smoother, but of course it will look better if the nails are longer.
